RASC News Agency: On Wednesday evening, 25th of September, Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra expressed deep concern on the social platform X, stating that the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, and Canada hold the Taliban accountable for violating the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. He described the condition of women and girls under Taliban rule in Afghanistan as both alarming and deeply distressing.
In reference to these countries’ warnings about referring the Taliban to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Hoekstra clarified that the objective of this move is to put an end to the Taliban’s “misogynistic” regulations. He asserted, “We cannot accept this situation. Therefore, the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, and Canada will hold the Taliban responsible for their violations of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.”
Previously, the foreign ministers of these four nations announced their decision to formally lodge a complaint against the Taliban at the ICC for “gender-based discrimination and the violation of women’s rights in Afghanistan.” During the United Nations General Assembly held on Wednesday, 25th of September, these countries condemned the Taliban’s increasing restrictions on women, underlining their commitment to ensuring the group is held accountable for the discriminatory measures imposed on Afghanistani women. Afghanistan, which is now under Taliban control, had acceded to this convention in 2003.
Based on available reports, if the Taliban continue to ignore the ICC’s authority, the court may issue a ruling prohibiting other nations from normalizing relations with the group.
