RASC News Agency: Joseph Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in his latest remarks, described the situation of women in Afghanistan under Taliban rule as unprecedented globally and called for exerting pressure on this group. Borrell made these statements on Tuesday, Mar 12, during a joint UN-EU cooperation session at the United Nations Security Council, where he deemed the humanitarian, economic, political, and human rights situation in Afghanistan alarming.
Borrell stated that women and girls have been practically sidelined from all dimensions of life, and this situation is unprecedented and intolerable on a global scale. The EU official further added, “We should not forget Afghanistan under Taliban rule, where gender apartheid is happening.” Borrell emphasized the importance of UN engagement with the Taliban while also stressing the need to exert pressure on the group.
This comes as under Taliban rule in Afghanistan, women and girls have been deprived of their most fundamental rights, including the right to education, work, and other personal and social freedoms. Despite international and domestic calls on the Taliban to respect human rights in Afghanistan, the group has continued to increase restrictions against women, girls, and citizens.
