RASC News Agency: Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, recently issued a report titled “The Situation in Afghanistan and Its Impact on Global Stability.” Published on Saturday, December 16th, this comprehensive 16-page document emphasizes the Taliban’s persistent refusal to establish an inclusive government, despite repeated requests. The report illuminates the oppressive treatment of women by the Taliban, who continue to restrict their rights across all facets of public life. The Taliban’s unwavering stance on women’s education and employment remains unchanged, intensifying an already dire situation.
Guterres highlights the escalating attacks by ISIS (Khorasan branch) in Afghanistan under Taliban control. He notes a troubling two percent increase in anti-security incidents compared to the previous year. The Secretary-General emphasizes the Taliban’s specific targeting of Afghanistani Shia citizens and the forced exile of political opponents. Despite these challenges, opponents have sought to challenge the Taliban’s authority through meetings held both domestically and internationally, including in Moscow, Dushanbe, and Vienna.
Moreover, Guterres addresses the economic and humanitarian crises in Afghanistan, revealing that two-thirds of the population urgently requires humanitarian aid, painting a grim picture of the country’s overall condition. Despite the Taliban’s announcement of a general amnesty, they have engaged in vengeful actions against soldiers from the previous government, subjecting them to arrest, imprisonment, torture, and even death.
The report presented by the Secretary-General highlights that during a specific three-month period, UNAMA recorded a minimum of 10 instances of unlawful killings, 21 arbitrary arrests, and eight cases of torture and mistreatment involving former government officials and soldiers. It is crucial to note that the Taliban has not officially responded to this report from the UN Secretary-General. However, based on available information, they have largely denied these allegations, deeming them unfounded.
